Breast Reduction (without implants)

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat, glandular tissue and skin from large and pendulous breasts, to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. Breast reduction surgery is likely to enhance your overall quality of life and self-image.

THE BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and may take up to 3 or 4 hours. The specific technique used to reduce the size of your breasts will vary based upon individual characteristics, amount of reduction desired, breast composition, aesthetic preferences and doctor recommendations. In some cases liposuction may be used in conjunction with the excision practices listed below.

THE METHOD(S)

The most preferred method involves making an anchor shaped incision around your nipple and areola and following the natural crease down the under surface of your breast. Excessive glandular fat tissue and skin are removed and the areola and nipple are reconstructed to a new position on the breast.

The incisions are brought together to reshape the reduced breast. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape close the skin.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for breast reduction is a non-smoking adult who has large, pendulous breasts and suffers from chronic headaches and/or back or neck pain. All appropriate candidates will have realistic expectations of results after surgery.

RECOVERY/POST-OPERATIVE

Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade somewhat over time
An elastic bandage or support bra may be worn to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal
A thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain excess blood or fluid that may collect
Slight discomfort for up to one to two weeks after surgery
Resume normal activities within two weeks following surgery
